    (4) Colleges That Require SAT Subject Tests

This is a sortable database of the SAT Subject Test Requirement for admission to some of top national universities and liberal arts colleges in America. The information contained in the database reflects the most recent information collected from various sources, including college websites.

SAT Subject Tests are offered for the following subjects:
    • English: Literature
    • Math: Level 1 (through Algebra 2) and Level 2 (through Trigonometry)
    • Science: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
    • History: World History and US History
    • Foreign Language (reading only tests): French, German, Italian, Latin, Modern Hebrew, Spanish
    • Foreign Language (reading and listening tests -- must be taken in during the November test administration): Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish
The SAT Subject Tests are multiple choice tests that take one hour to complete. The SAT Subject Tests are given during the October, November, December, January, May and June test administrations. (Subject Tests are not given during the March test administration.)

While some colleges, including the University of California, do not require that applicants submit SAT Subject Test scores as a part of their college admission applications, most of these colleges will still consider applicants' Subject Test scores in the evaluation of the applicants' strengths and interests.

Furthermore, colleges may require specific SAT Subject Tests for particular majors or special programs. For example, most colleges require, or at least strongly recommend, that applicants to engineering and computer science majors provide SAT Subject Tests for Math Level 2 and a science. Many colleges that offer accelerated medical and dental programs (so called BA/MD or BA/DDS programs), require applicants to take the Math Level 2 and Chemistry Subject Tests. Lastly, colleges may have a different set of SAT Subject Test requirements for home-schooled students.

Students are advised to consider taking a Subject Test is an area that they have studied at the advance level (preferably in an Advanced Placement course) at the end of the school year (i.e., during the May and June test administrations).
