(1) 4-year High School Plan

The tables below show the typical 4-year high school academic plan for students for intend to apply for admission to a four-year college.
  • The first table sets out the minimum high school coursework required for college admissions distributed over four years of high school.
  • The second table presents the recommended four-year high school coursework for students applying to the University of California system.
  • The third table presents the recommended four-year high school coursework for students applying to highly selective colleges and universities, including the top-tier UC's (UCLA and UC Berkeley) as well as elite private colleges.
  • The fourth table presents a schedule of the college preparation courses offered at most high school, showing the rigor of the coursework from "less rigorous" to "most rigorous" over four years of high school.

TABLE 1:
MINIMALLY REQUIRED COURSEWORK FOR ADMISSIONS TO 4-YEAR COLLEGES: All colleges have minimum high school academic coursework requirements for students applying to college as freshmen. The following table shows how the college preparation course requirements for the University of California system and California State University system (also know as the "a-g" subject requriement for UC Eligibility) are distributed throughout the four years of high school.

4-YEAR HIGH SCHOOL PLAN FOR "REGULAR LEVEL" STUDENTS: In addition to the minimum college preparation coursework required for college admission, students should continue to take additional classes in subjects such as mathematics, science, and foreign language. These additional classes (highlighted in green below) are recommended for students applying to the University of California.

TABLE 3:
4-YEAR HIGH SCHOOL PLAN FOR "ADVANCED LEVEL" STUDENTS: Students who plan to apply to highly selective colleges and universities (such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, and elite private colleges and universities) should take the most challenging coursework available at their high school. The table below is an example of the type of rigorous coursework that will make an applicant competitive for admissions to highly selective colleges. (Keep in mind that while it is important to show colleges that students are challenging themselves by taking rigorous courses, students also need to show that they can do well by achieving good grades.)
